TIM HOLLAND
Article by: Jameson Bell
28 May 2006

The brightest star shining in the backgammon sky for quite some decades is the unanimously famous Tim Holland who has been showered by titles for his stupendous success in the field. Tim Holland is widely popular as the world?s leading backgammon player. Statistically Tim holds the most number of major titles in the history of backgammon. The crowning of success began with the most prestigious backgammon title, the World Championships. He started his journey way back in 1967 from Las Vegas and retained the title for three consecutive years, which is a world record yet to be surpassed. His success story was not limited to the geographical boundaries of the US as he won titles across the globe winning consistently with aplomb. His success in the International Championship of Backgammon at London permanently secured his place in the hall of fame. He became the champion at London twice. The credit of Tim Holland is further glorified by the fact that he had to fight his way up the success ladder at the time when a bunch of stalwarts were in the fray. The list includes all time heavy weights of the likes of Oswald Jacoby and John Crawford. The name of Tim Holland has always been reckoned as a successful veteran for handicapping contest. He won the famous $20,000 Arlington Park Handicapping Contest in the same year after his path breaking success in Turfway Park Handicapping Blowout early in 2004. As per the handicapping contest is concerned, we cannot forget his record successes at the Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship. The Arlington contest added another feather to his cap. The Holland Rule was invented and implemented by him, which he recommends in the post-Crawford stages of a game. It states that the trailer can only double after both sides have played two rolls. This rule became quiet popular back in the 80?s, however the complications of the rule prevented it from becoming an all-time favorite, hence now-a-days its hardly in use. Holland has a spontaneous flair for teaching and his books have been best sellers from time to time. He always tries to teach the beginners using a unique pleasurable method, providing them with the essential comfort level that all beginners need. . Some of his best books are 'Beginning Backgammon', 'Backgammon for People Who Hate to lose' and 'Better Backgammon'. 'Beginning Backgammon' maps out how to win a game move by move with the aid of uniquely applied strategies and intuitive power. 'Better Backgammon' consists of 64 crazy problems to give the player an edge over the opponent. The earlier books teaches through the 'fun and learn' technique, the latter stands for a proper analysis and offers multiple solutions to similar looking problems finally recommending the best solution through analytical thoughts and reasoning. If the former one is treated as a hand holding book for the beginners, the latter may be treated as the Experts? tips for the experienced players. Through immaculate innovative ways of illustrations and his own expert advice with diagrams, 'Better Backgammon' has become a unique guideline for the experienced players. It may also be noted that the New York resident Tim Holland has always been remembered for his aggressive and innovative gaming strategies. In his book Backgammon for People Who Hate to Lose, he discusses the psychological guidance of playing the game for winning. The advantage has been the narrating examples quoted from his life and from his enormous bank of won titles.
