Backgammon strategies

Backgammon is one of the oldest games ever recorded in the history of the world. It is captivating and exciting. In order to have a chance to win at backgammon every player should have a good strategy. Backgammon is a game that requires skills. A player has to know what moves are in his advantages in every stage of the game. The most frequent used strategies are the following: the running game strategy, the priming game strategy, the holding game strategy, the backgammon blitz strategy and the back game strategy. If you learn one or all these basic strategies your chances of winning will be much higher. Some players use more than one of these strategies during a game depending on how the game evolves. The first basic strategy is the running game. The objective of this strategy is to bring all your checkers into your home section of the backgammon board and bear them off as rapid as possible. This strategy is like a race against time. This strategy is great to use when you already passed your opponent’s checkers or in case you can do this quickly and with no problems. It is great to use also when it is obvious that you have fewer pips than your opponent and you can get all your checkers off more rapidly. Before you start using this strategy always evaluate your position to make sure that this strategy is in your advantage. In case you have more pips to make than your adversary this strategy is really not advisable, because you will fail for sure. The second basic strategy in backgammon is the holding game strategy. The goal of this strategy is to control a point on the backgammon board. The ideal location is highly in your adversary’s board, somewhere in his inner board or even better the bar point. This is more a style than a strategy in backgammon. The best holding game anchors are the bar points and the 20 point, giving you more chances to hit your adversary when he tries to bring his checkers closer to the home section. If you hold points further back your strategy will be weaker. Another crucial thing to understand when you are using this strategy is to know when the right time to offer a doubling cube is, and even more crucial is knowing when to drop or accept a double. You must make wise decisions when you are defending and playing a holding game. The next basic strategy that a player can use in a backgammon game is the priming game strategy. In essence this is a holding game strategy with one difference; players must build a prime in the path of his opponent’s checkers. The prime is a wall made from your checkers that blocks the adversary’s checkers behind it. The ideal number of points to make a prime is six points in a row. The checkers of your opponent will be trapped behind the wall as long as you maintain the prime. He will be strongly struggling to move his checkers around the backgammon board while you make your moves. The main goal of this strategy is to hit your adversary’s blot and trap it behind the prime. This blockade made out of your checkers can be built anywhere you want between points number two and eleven on your board. When bearing off approaches you can quickly shuffle your checkers into your home section of the backgammon board. The game gets pretty interesting when both players are using the priming game strategy. Usually if both players have great blockades, the one that has more pips remained has a stronger chance to win the game, because the one leading will be forced to give up the blockade first, giving the other player a chance to start moving his checker towards home. The next basic strategy is the backgammon blitz strategy. This is an interesting strategy. The objective is to attack your adversary’s checkers while he makes his moves in your inner board and keeping them on the bar as much as possible. The ultimate goal is to trap your opponent’s checkers on the bar by occupying all the points in your home board. This way your opponent will not be able to get back in the game until you start bearing your own checkers off. This is a 100% winning strategy but you must remember that once you start to attack you must continue as much as possible. You need to know that in case your attacks will fail because your opponent has managed to make an anchor or because your checkers are also hit by your opponent you can easily lose the game. As interesting as this strategy is, as hard it is to do it properly. So, make sure you are capable of staying ahead in the game before you think of using this strategy, or try to combine it with another one. The back game strategy is only possible in case you manage to control two or even more points in your adversary’s home section of the board. The objective is to hit a blot of the adversary somewhere late in the game and contain it. All strategies are hard because the luck of the roll of dice has a strong influence on the game. To have a full success with this strategy you have to make two anchors and have at least ten checkers more advanced then your opponent. This strategy is not advisable to use during a whole game, but combined with another strategy will be absolutely great, your opponent will go down fast and easy. Backgammon seems really easy but it requires skills and mind. With a lot of practice, anyone can be a great backgammon player. And with this useful strategies you will be a winner.
