Backgammon is a game that has roots going back centuries. The game is very popular and is sort of a racing game. The game is played one on one with an opponent and is played on a special board. It uses 15 game pieces and can be played using checkers, though generally when a backgammon set is purchased it uses its own disks.
There are 24 points on the backgammon game board and it is divided into 4 separate parts. On this board, each player has a home board and an inner board and the object of the game is to be the first player who moves his pieces to the home board and then bears them off while hitting entering the game pieces of his or her opponent.
Despite the fact that dice are used in the game, the game is actually one of skill as opposed to a game of chance. Backgammon is a game of strategy and is often compared to the game of chess. The latest variation to the game was the introduction of the doubling cube and the game has since been linked with gambling. It is know that many of the world’s top poker players are also avid backgammon players.
The game of Backgammon dates back as far as 3500 BC and is in fact the world’s oldest board game that is known to man. Evidence shows that the earliest versions of the game were played in Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Rome. The game has since evolved to that which it is today.
The origin of the games name, Backgammon, is derived from the two Middle English words “back” and “gamen” meaning game. The Backgammon game reached the peak of popularity in the 20th century which was during the 1970’s. The game was revived once again during the 1990’s and is played competitively online by players worldwide, and there are now indeed sites in which Backgammon can be played for money. These game rooms are similar to online casinos or online bingo rooms.
You go to such a site, register and provide payment details and other information and you then compete for cash prizes. These Backgammon halls are growing in popularity and will soon rival the traffic realized in some of the online poker rooms. Learning Backgammon is not difficult, and with practice you could be playing a skilled game against some of the world’s best players and winning money in the process.
